Weekend volunteers needed 9/10 February

We are looking for some help to plant a few hundred young thorn bushes at the Mere Scarborough A fence that we have been working on needs to be completed before the young plants die . We would be meeting at the Mere at 10am to start work just after , don’t worry if you have no experience we will show you what to do its easy . You would be helping towards refurbishing the habitat for rather a lot of hedge row creatures Have a look http://www.hedgelink.org.uk/. Been able to drive/walk by and say I did that is a fantastic feeling

Gloves will be provided as you will be working with thorn

It would not be a long task but it is muddy and wet so you will need old clothes , tough boots maybe a hot drink .

Please let me know if you would like to take part and what day is good for you so I can plan day and get plants and tools to the site . You can get me @ ronbaxter_art@yahoo.co.uk

right then the date is set for our first wood thinning in Forge Valley & Raincliffe woods
from the 6 of feb on each  Wednesdays  for 4 weeks we will be working close to Green gate car park clearing out the undergrowth and a good number of the trees will be coppiced for future use in things like furniture making . that is the 6,13,20,27 of feb
it will be a joint exercise with the con vols and tools will be provided . wood from the aria will be used so not to worry about cutting down trees and wasting the wood.

interesting times

Well what a productive meeting last night . Some things had to be put back till finer days but we have agreed on the site of our first thinning with the council and will be going down with out tree expert Peter Everitt to further plan the activity , we will hopefully be able to get some funding to have a Wood retort and use it to generate a much needed fuel supply .

We also discussed the mountain bikers ,the consensus in the meeting was to try and bring them on-board and ask them to respect the woodlands and its other users with the hope that this would encourage them to behave in a safe and responsible way . The land owner SBC however have taken a no tolerance position regarding those bikers that do not stick to the bridle ways . As the council representative explained it was not just health and safety but a matter of legal responsibility, if they knew of people using the woods and did not take every effort to stop it they SBC would be held responsible . So alas we must bow to the land owners wishes .

We have also been asked by Natural England to carry out a flower survey in Forge and we have accepted the task. Given that not many of us could tell the difference between a blue bell and a oak tree (me lol) we will have some training on identification. This will be in the spring and early summer so the snow might have gone , if your interested in taking part please let me know and I will try and get as many involved as I can
